Menagerie of Idioms

New for 2026 is my Menagerie of Idioms.

I am over the moon to have created an indoor sculpture trail  suitable for visitors of all ages and available to hire.

Currently consisting of twenty one creatures set in theatrical installations inspired by well-known idioms and phrases. From a tiger jumping through a hoop of flames to playful puppetry, each scene is packed with character and humour.

Follow the trail and see if you can uncover the phrases behind each character.

The menagerie will be making their debut at the iconic Bamburgh Castle from 14th February 2026 until November 2026.

This fun exhibition will hopefully have you tickled pink.

I've been a very busy bee and worked my socks off creating these creatures using techniques learnt over the last few years in the prop making industry.

Inspired by the Cement Menagerie in Branxton, a residential back garden bursting at the seams with life-sized concrete sculptures created by retired joiner John Fairnington for his disabled son Edwin (sadly the animals are now gone).

Each piece has taken between 2 weeks and 2 months to complete depending on complexity. To create the fur I shred and layer fabric, this is incredibly labour intensive.

Recycled and vintage finds have been used where possible to give character and charm.

I am pleased as punch to have engaged illustrator Trina Dalziel who's wonderful work can be seen throughout the exhibition.

Special thanks also to:

Jason Bullock- woodwork and engineering.

Harvey Bullock- welding.

Jill Harrison- for her help with the Rococo dress.

Sue Rudge- graphic design

Inese Krauze- fish out of water photographs

Leah Pendeleton- signwriting

If you are visiting Northumberland in 2026 please pop into Bamburgh Castle for a Goosey Gander and leave Happy as Larry.
